Winter road salt applications in the Lake Michigan basin are between 1.5 and 2 million tons per year, nearly doubling the salinity in 2020. Salt Wise started as an informational campaign to reduce these numbers, but has since grown into a coordinated statewide coalition working to train and educate the public and road maintenance professionals about safe, effective and cost-efficient salt application to protect our water and drinking water and save money.
