Wisconsin Salt Wise is a statewide campaign that educates winter maintenance professionals on best practices for reducing road salt use through Smart Salting workshops, equipment open houses, calibration demonstrations, and webinars.
Winter road salting is the leading contributor to rising chloride levels in Wisconsin waterways, with 47 rivers and lakes identified as impaired due to high chloride concentrations, 30 of which are in the Lake Michigan watershed. Salt Wise participants consistently report 20 to 50 percent reductions in salt use following training.
This grant funds the Salt Wise program staff position housed at the Capital Area Regional Planning Commission, and continues the Fund’s multi-year investment in this growing statewide initiative.
