Salt Wise started as an informal partnership, and with FFLM support has grown into a coordinated statewide campaign that provides connections between professionals, researchers and implementers working to reduce salt use. This grant funds a staff position for the program currently housed at Madison Metropolitan Sewer District, which focuses on 1) accelerating the adoption of Salt Wise practices by hosting trainings, webinars, certification programs, and open houses for winter maintenance professionals, and 2) educating the public about salt’s impact on water quality around the state. In 2023 and beyond they are building on their efforts by partnering with UW and Extension to conduct more aggressive data collection and create online dashboards for easy access, as well as expanding their outreach and education campaign to campus facilities.
