Wetlands in our Community

  • Grant Recipient: Heckrodt Wetland Reserve
  • Amount: $12,000
  • Year: 2024
  • Watershed: Fox River
  • Focus Area: Monitoring/Watershed Planning

Our funding would support a water quality monitoring, data collection and education program at the Heckrodt Wetland Reserve (HWR) in the City of Menasha. The HWR is located on the north shore of Lake Winnebago and was once part of a large, forested wetland. Today, it is one of the largest tracks of wetlands remaining in the Lower Fox River. The reserve contains 91 acres and has over 60,000 visitors every year. HWR will submit results from the water quality monitoring to the WDNR Surface Water Integrated Monitoring System. Staff will use the results to provide an annual report to the community on the health of the wetlands and use it as a tool to engage the community in road salting and stormwater management.
