Community Water Solutions (CWS) will set up a water science laboratory in the Lindsay Heights neighborhood of Milwaukee. Sage Water recently donated an EDS Environmental Discovery System – Water Management System to CWS which had been housed at the Global Water Center. The new lab and state-of-the art equipment will be used to teach high school students about the principles of “One Water,” a holistic approach to water management that treats all water – surface, ground, drinking and wastewater – as one interconnected system. The lab will be used by students involved in CWS’ Water Sector Mentoring and Employment Project (WSMEP). The program aims to engage Black and Latinx youth as water stewards and to encourage them to consider careers in the water field. Students who participate in WSMEP go through a ten-week program that follows an academic water curriculum that includes scientific experiments and mentoring facilitated by water sector experts. Youth collect water in their homes and have it tested for lead and other contaminants. They also take field trips to places like MMSD and Milwaukee Waterworks and participate in water-focused service projects with organizations like Groundwork Milwaukee and Milwaukee Riverkeeper.
