The WATERshed Program

Our funding would support the WATERshed Program.  The program has educated approximately 2,000 fourth, fifth, and twelfth grade students annually in Racine and Kenosha school districts for the past 17 years. The program uses place-based field trips, in-class learning, community engagement, and student field work to build understanding of freshwater resources and the Lake Michigan watershed. Field trips for Kenosha students take place at Southport Park, while Racine students visit the Root River Environmental Education Center.

The program helps young people make connections between their daily choices and the health of local waterways, building respect for the watershed in which they live and increasing interest in protecting and restoring Lake Michigan’s shoreline. Teachers implement Great Lakes education in their classrooms and engage students in service projects that can lead to lasting improvements in stormwater runoff and water quality in the communities along Lake Michigan.
