With support from FFLM, the Take Back My Meds (TBMM) Coalition in Milwaukee and Racine will continue their campaigns to ensure that unused medicine gets disposed of in secure drop boxes. TBMM has created an impressive coalition of health care, drug prevention and environmental partners to promote drug take back. The coalition is the only entity in Milwaukee and Racine Counties raising the issue of harm to Lake Michigan in the context of opioid abuse. TBMM has helped site nearly 60 disposal sites in Milwaukee and Racine Counties, including 22 in the past year. They added six new coalition members, bring the total to over 40 organizations represented. TBMM expects that they will have collected over 5000 lbs. of unused medications over the past year, an estimate based on the average of 100 pounds/year/box. Collecting these medications, especially in neighborhoods with deteriorating sewer infrastructure, means they can significantly decrease the number of pollutants that are flushed.  This will keep them out of rivers, groundwater, and Lake Michigan.
