With support from the Fund, the Take Back My Meds (TBMM) Coalition in Milwaukee and Racine will continue their campaigns to ensure that unused medicine gets disposed of in secure drop boxes. TBMM has created an impressive coalition of health care, drug prevention and environmental partners to promote drug take back. The coalition is the only entity in Milwaukee and Racine counties raising the issue of harm to Lake Michigan in the context of opioid abuse. Unused medicine in Milwaukee and Racine Counties is far too often improperly disposed of in a way that is harming Lake Michigan. Roughly one third of all prescription medication goes unused. Less than 10% of that medicine is ever collected. Many still flush medicine down the toilet, which flows directly into Lake Michigan from Milwaukee and Racine because sewage treatment plants unable to treat it. Medicine thrown in the trash leaches into ground and surface water from landfills.
