Medicine flushed down the toilet flows directly to Lake Michigan, and medicine thrown in the trash leaches into rivers from landfills. Fund-supported studies and water quality monitoring confirm that Milwaukee’s rivers and Lake Michigan are contaminated with dozens of prescription and illegal drugs. Community Advocates will work with other members of the Take Back My Meds MKE Coalition to place drop boxes, which are approved by the federal Drug Enforcement Agency, in pharmacies in Milwaukee County. Each drop box will collect approximately 500 pounds of unused medicine per year.
