Shagbark Recreational Area Wet Prairie Restoration

  • Grant Recipient: Root Pike WIN
  • Amount: $123,178
  • Year: 2023
  • Watershed: Lake Michigan Coast
  • Focus Area: Habitat Restoration

Our funding will support restoration at Shagbark Recreational Area in northwestern Kenosha. Root-Pike WIN is working with the City of Kenosha to develop a phased approach for the restoration of the Shagbark Recreational Area as well as other sections of the Pike Creek. Pike Creek has been significantly damaged as the City of Kenosha has developed.  The last two miles of the stream run underground through downtown where the stream flows into Kenosha Harbor. Phase 1 of this project will convert 40 acres of grass back to native wet prairie and upland vegetation adjacent to the Pike Creek stream channel. The project will include retrofitting the wet pond to integrate constructed wetland features, a native riparian buffer, and fish passage improvements which will connect with the headwaters of Pike Creek.
