Riparian Buffer Restoration Phase Two

  • Grant Recipient: Eco-Justice Center
  • Amount: $43,185
  • Year: 2025
  • Watershed: Lake Michigan Coast
  • Focus Area: Habitat Restoration

The Eco-Justice Center is an environmental education center with a working farm, organic garden and livestock operation. The center is home to alpacas which are raised for their high value fiber and nutrient dense manure. The center also runs a Farm Corps program which trains future land stewards and small scale farmers about regenerative agriculture and community nutrition.

FFLM and the Daybreak Fund co-invested in phase one of the project, which was completed in 2024, and included land and water surveys, the development of a comprehensive land use plan and land clearing to prepare for restoration. The Daybreak investment focused on creating a demonstration of agroforestry practices – where 30-50% of the harvest is donated to the local food pantry. Phase two will be more labor-intensive, including the installation of riparian buffers and native seed plantings alongside emerging perennial food crops.
