Return the Sturgeon – Lake Sturgeon Reintroduction in the Lake Michigan Basin

  • Grant Recipient: Riveredge Nature Center
  • Amount: $65,000
  • Year: 2022
  • Watershed: Milwaukee River
  • Focus Area: Stream Restoration

This project is a continuation of the 25-year effort between Riveredge Nature Center and the WDNR to restore self-sustaining populations of lake sturgeon to the Milwaukee River after a 100-year absence. For the past sixteen years a mostly all-volunteer team trained and supported by Riveredge has raised and released approximately 1,200-1,500 yearlings a year in a special streamside rearing facility. An average of 2,000 community members take part in hand-releasing the fingerling sturgeon, and Riveredge hosts educational booths at several events throughout the year. In addition, approximately 7,000 visitors view their educational display tank at Riveredge visitor center each year.  Eggs are collected in April and transported to the Streamside Rearing Facility for six months until they mature to 6-8 inch fingerlings. The fingerlings will be released into the Milwaukee River at Harbor Fest on September 24, 2022.
