Restoring Water Quality at Veteran’s Lagoon Phase II

  • Grant Recipient: Milwaukee County
  • Amount: $122,500
  • Year: 2021
  • Watershed: Lake Michigan Coast
  • Focus Area: Habitat Restoration

Veterans Park Lagoon in Milwaukee has become a popular destination for outdoor recreation, but the water has become so polluted that toxic blue-green algae levels have raised serious human and animal health concerns. However, the Army Corp of Engineers believes that with some restoration work, the lagoon could be connected to Lake Michigan and serve as crucial habitat for migratory bird and fish species. The results of this feasibility study could result in anywhere from $10 to $25 million in investment from the federal government, a refreshed community space, and a novel coastal ecosystem for threatened and endangered species.
