Restoring Urban Soil Health to Protect Lake Michigan Water Quality

Our funding will support the demonstration of a new green infrastructure practice known as “Suburban Subsoiling” at a site in West Allis where pavement is planned for removal. Suburban Subsoiling is a land development practice that “decompacts” and amends soil with compost to restore biologically active soil profiles that dramatically reduce polluted runoff. The practice seeks to reverse the impacts inherent in modern land development that incentivize land to be stripped of all vegetation and compacted, then spread with a thin layer of topsoil that does not allow deep rooted vegetation and removes the hydrologic function of the soil. This demonstration project will lead to data to support incorporation of Suburban Subsoiling into DNR’s Urban Soil Health Technical Standards.
