Fund For Lake Michigan

Restoring Ecological Health and Aquatic Biodiversity on Lake Michigan

The Natural Resources Foundation is working with UW Madison, UW Milwaukee, WDNR Office of Great Waters, and the Army Corps of Engineers to design a series of sills (underwater barriers) to prevent erosion and protect habitat at Kenosha Dunes State Natural Area. Unlike typical breakwaters, the sills will allow water to circulate along the beach, which is critical for supporting plant and animal life. The Fund’s grant helps match a $250,000 award from the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation Coastal Resiliency Fund.
