Fund For Lake Michigan

Reconnecting Coldwater Habitat and Improving Road Stream Infrastructure Resiliency in NE Wisconsin

  • Grant Recipient: Trout Unlimited
  • Amount: $175,000
  • Year: 2020
  • Watershed: Other
  • Focus Area: Stream Restoration

Road stream crossings such as undersized culverts or poorly constructed bridges can block the passage of aquatic organisms and lead to road flooding during heavy rain events. The barriers that restrict fish movement also isolate populations and decrease genetic diversity, which could impede the species’ ability to adapt to climate change. With the Fund’s support, Trout Unlimited will remove fish barriers, thus connecting over 30 miles of habitat, and teach communities how to adapt their road infrastructure, allowing both the built and natural environment to become more resilient in the face of climate change.
