Polk Springs Stream Relocation

  • Grant Recipient: Washington County
  • Amount: $50,000
  • Year: 2024
  • Watershed: Milwaukee River
  • Focus Area: Stream Restoration

ur funding would support a quarter mile restoration on Polk Springs Creek in Washington County. The project will re-meander the stream which is currently channelized, pull back undercut streambanks and create a 75-foot buffer on each side of the stream.  Polk Springs Creek has the potential to support cold water species but has faced significant pressure from agricultural uses over the past century.  Washington County is working to reverse this damage. This work includes installing grass waterways, building better manure storage facilities, breaking up field tile lines and restoring the streambank of nearly a mile of the five-mile stream.  This project would build on previous work with the goal of Polk Springs Creek once again supporting trout and other cold-water species.
