Fund For Lake Michigan

Pilot Experiments to Optimize Soil Management for Nutrient Retention in Green Infrastructure

  • Grant Recipient: Marquette University
  • Amount: $61,750
  • Year: 2021
  • Watershed: Milwaukee River
  • Focus Area: Green Infrastructure, Nutrient Management, Research

While green infrastructure is highly effective in managing water where it falls, more research is needed to optimize green infrastructure and develop best practices. Marquette University will test three strategies at Green Tech Station: low-compost engineered soils, irrigation to suppress nitrate production, and mowing and nutrient removal. The results will improve future green infrastructure investments throughout  the Lake Michigan watershed.
