Pike River Phase III River and Habitat Restoration

  • Grant Recipient: Kenosha County
  • Amount: $100,000
  • Year: 2024
  • Watershed: Pike River
  • Focus Area: Stream Restoration

A grant from the Fund will support Phase III implementation of the Pike River Restoration Design Plan at Petrifying Springs County Park.  Under this third and final phase of the project, Kenosha County will restore the Pike River adjacent to UW Parkside’s campus.  This project complements extensive work that has occurred upstream on the north and south branches of the Pike River.  The Fund has supported the previous two phases of this project as well as a dam removal in 2012 that kick started the restoration project.

Down cut and eroding portions of the streambank will be graded to a stable incline and stabilized with native vegetation. Just under five acres of brush and tree clearing will be conducted on site following best management practices. In areas of the river with natural changes in flow velocity or direction, stone revetments will be installed to prevent future erosion during high flow conditions. Bank stabilization practices will include the installation of in-stream structures to provide energy dissipation, channel stability, and re-introduce aquatic habitat.
