Peshtigo River Streambank Protection and Habitat Improvement Project

  • Grant Recipient: Marinette County
  • Amount: $142,760
  • Year: 2024
  • Watershed: Lake Michigan Coast
  • Focus Area: Stream Restoration

Our funding will support over 1,500 feet of stream restoration along the Peshtigo River. The Peshtigo River is a critical resource in the recovery of lake sturgeon and the ongoing efforts by the Wisconsin DNR to restore a self-sustaining population of Great Lakes spotted musky in Green Bay. The project will restore 1,540 feet of shoreline along a sweeping bend on the Peshtigo River known as Hemlock Curve. The upstream portion of the project area (900 feet) is privately owned and is armored with demolition waste consisting of large concrete slabs and columns placed by the previous owner, the Badger Paper Company. The downstream portion of the project (640 feet) is owned by the Wisconsin DNR and contains severely eroding streambanks, largely caused by the upstream armoring. The goal of the project is to restore habitat for fish and wildlife along the entire river bend.
