Fund For Lake Michigan

Monitoring the Performance of a Subsurface Gravel Wetland

  • Grant Recipient: Marquette University
  • Amount: $75,000
  • Year: 2019
  • Watershed: Fox River
  • Focus Area: Research

Marquette will conduct research on the effectiveness of treating polluted runoff with subsurface gravel wetlands. These engineered wetlands have shown significant promise as a green infrastructure practice but have not been widely adopted in Wisconsin due to a lack of monitoring studies and technical design standards. Oshkosh is an ideal site for this work, and this represents our first project in the city. Results will support broader adoption of the technology throughout the Lake Michigan basin.
