This project will demonstrate the water quality benefits of natural versus conventional lawn care, with UW Madison soil scientists comparing soil samples from conventional lawns to soils from four natural lawn care (NLC) sites in the Milwaukee area. Two of the NLC sites will serve as high-profile demonstration projects where people can learn what a naturally-managed lawn looks like and how to manage their own lawns without chemicals. With this funding, the Midwest Pesticide Action Center will also help homeowners convert 20 residential lawns to the NLC system and promote education through signage, press releases, and public events.
