Maywood and Evergreen Parks Water Quality Improvement

  • Grant Recipient: City of Sheboygan
  • Amount: $70,000
  • Year: 2023
  • Watershed: Lake Michigan Coast
  • Focus Area: Habitat Restoration, Stream Restoration, Green Infrastructure

The City of Sheboygan will utilize green infrastructure to stabilize gullies, address erosion at stormwater outfalls, and manage sedimentation from drainpipes at Maywood and Evergreen Parks along the Pigeon River. In addition, partners will host public outreach, education, and demonstration events along with the project to highlight the use of green infrastructure to provide stormwater management and water quality and educate local residents on the effects of land use and climate change. Gully stabilization combined with stormwater management in urban areas is a recommendation of the 9 Key Element Plan for the Pigeon River, which has a 303d listing due to excessive phosphorus. Improving water quality in the area will benefit coastal habitat for migratory birds and butterflies, spawning areas for fish, habitat for freshwater mussels, and habitat for a host of resident wildlife species.
