This grant would support a pilot project in the village of Menomonee Falls to improve fall leaf management with a goal of reducing phosphorus entering the Menomonee River. This pilot project would encourage residents to mulch their leaves in place as opposed to collecting them in piles and moving them to the streets. This method has been shown to increase soil fertility, reduce phosphorus leaching and decrease the costs for municipalities. In 2016 the FFLM funded research at USGS to better understand the impact fall leaf collection methods can have on water quality. This research clearly showed that improving fall leaf collection methods was far and away the most impactful action municipalities could take to reduce phosphorus from entering water bodies.
