Installation of Ecological Design for Upslope Runoff Management at Klode Park

  • Grant Recipient: Village of Whitefish Bay
  • Amount: $40,000
  • Year: 2023
  • Watershed: Lake Michigan Coast
  • Focus Area: Habitat Restoration, Green Infrastructure

The Village of Whitefish Bay will improve water quality and prevent erosion at Klode Park, a popular park on the shores of Lake Michigan. As part of the first phase of the project, the Village will replace 50,000 square feet of turf grass with native plants to stabilize the slope, capture stormwater and improve habitat. The project will also include 90 linear feet of regenerative stormwater conveyance and 2,000 square feet of bioswale to capture, store, infiltrate, and treat stormwater before it reaches Lake Michigan. Together, the improvements will capture 78,000 gallons of stormwater, reduce peak flow rates by over 80%, and reduce stormwater pollutants such as TSS, total phosphorus, and bacteria by 87%, 55%, and 66%, respectively.
