Olson Park used to serve as a snow dump site for the City, and was identified by LNRP as a major source of pollutants to the River. LNRP was able to advocate relocation of the snow pile and convince Algoma to invest in the Park for water quality benefits and recreational enhancement. LNRP has been working with Algoma on these park improvements since 2019 through their municipal-focused Coastal Resiliency Community Impact Project to address local sources of pollution and potential climate resilience.
Plans include installation of two bioretention ponds, runoff capture systems, increased permeable surfaces, invasive species control, and native revegetation to aid in runoff pretreatment and retention. The project will reduce nonpoint pollution to the Ahnapee River, increase infiltration and groundwater recharge, improve wildlife habitat and green space, as well as provide recreational opportunities for the community. Bioretention ponds will result in over 200,000 gallons of stormwater treatment annually.
