Groundwork Milwaukee’s Urban Water’s Education and Awareness Project

  • Grant Recipient: Groundwork Milwaukee
  • Amount: $25,000
  • Year: 2016
  • Watershed: Milwaukee River, Menomonee River, Kinnickinnic River
  • Focus Area: Green Infrastructure

This $25,000 award will support Groundwork Milwaukee’s program to install green infrastructure and water harvesting structures at 10 of the 92 community gardens they manage on behalf of the City of Milwaukee. Each of these community gardens has a cohort of approximately 10-15 active gardeners that help maintain the garden. For this program, volunteers and members of Groundwork Milwaukee’s Youth Green Team will install rain barrels, rain gardens, bioswales, and “Rain Sheds”—storage sheds that also capture and store rainwater—at the 10 selected gardens. The project will also include a job training program that targets neighborhood youth.
