Loss of wetlands in the Milwaukee River watershed has increased damage from flooding, decreased aquatic diversity, and had a detrimental effect on water quality. Working with MMSD’s Green Seams program, OWLT will develop restoration options to maximize water quality, provide habitat for native plants and animals, and provide public access in nine nature preserves on the North Branch of the Milwaukee River. The project will permanently protect 630 acres, including approximately 400 acres of wetlands with the potential to capture 945 million gallons of floodwater. OWLT will also install four interpretive educational displays to educate the public on the water quality benefits of land protection through restoration and enhancement to natural landscapes.
