With this grant, the Great Bubble Barrier, a company founded in the Netherlands in 2017 to address plastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems, will assess the feasibility of installing one of their bubble barriers in the Root River in Racine. GBB is the first company to use an innovative and energy-efficient bubble curtain technology to intercept plastic pollution in rivers before it reaches larger water bodies where it is almost impossible to retrieve. The great bubble barrier has proven quite effective in the Netherlands, capturing 86% of plastic waste from rivers without hindering ship or fish passage.
