Our funding would support a comprehensive ecosystem analysis and planning process for Fish Creek in Door County. This plan will focus on data collection, planning and preliminary design for stream and habitat restoration. The creek originally was home to a diverse and abundant fish population, earning its name. Unfortunately, local stressors over the last century have significantly degraded the water quality of the stream. These stressors include channelization, loss of tree canopy due to emerald ash borer and a small dam that has restricted fish passage and caused the stream to be significantly warmer.
Once implemented the identified projects have the potential to bring Fish Creek back to the cool water stream it once was. Removal of barriers should once again allow fish species to reach spawning habitat in the headwaters of the stream.
