Coastal Wetland Aviary Project

  • Grant Recipient: Lincoln Park Zoological Society
  • Amount: $100,000
  • Year: 2024
  • Watershed: Manitowoc River
  • Focus Area: Habitat Restoration, Stream Restoration

With our support, the Lincoln Park Zoological Society, in conjunction with the City of Manitowoc, seeks to turn an area of the Zoo on the Manitowoc River into a coastal wetland aviary to attract coastal and wetland birds and educate visitors on wild birdlife and the ecological Lake Michigan landscape. The Shorebird Exhibit will not retain birds, but instead will be a natural, open-air habitat that will attract wild shorebirds. The restoration will also help resolve sedimentation and erosion issues with existing infrastructure that lead to runoff that ultimately flows into Lake Michigan.
