This grant will support on-the-ground restoration at five popular state-owned sites along or near Lake Michigan. Projects will include rain garden installations, wetland restorations and invasive species management at Havenwoods State Forest, Kohler-Andrae State Park, Lakeshore State Park, Point Beach State Forest, and Red Banks Alvar State Natural Area. At Kohler-Andrae activities will include rain garden enhancement, planting, and management, as well as updates to the stormwater system. At Lakeshore State Park activities will include prescribed burning, invasive species removal and a nine-acre native prairie restoration. The Point Beach State Forest restoration will include enhancing the existing rain garden and constructing a new area utilizing dune grass and other native plants. Work at Red Banks Alvar State Natural Area will include controlling invasive species and forest stand improvement. Finally, work at Havenwoods State Forest will enhance the existing, overgrown rain garden near the nature center to slow and filter the drainage of water to intermittent creeks and wetlands that feed into Lincoln Creek.
