Carstens Lake Water Quality Improvement Project

This grant will fund design, permitting and construction of a sediment basin and restoration of four wetland acres on Carstens Lake. The project will complement other efforts in the area to work with farmers on cropping practices to reduce runoff. In addition, the project will highlight research by UWGB and UWSP on the beneficial reuse of slag (steel byproduct) as a potential medium to absorb phosphorus. The sedimentation basin will capture suspended solids and harvest reactive phosphorus during runoff events, which are a major source of nutrient loading into Carstens Lake. In addition, the wetland restoration will enhance water quality as well as habitat and native plant communities.
