This grant would support operations at Harbor Distric Inc. and their work on the inner harbor of Milwaukee. HDI has quickly established itself as a respected and effective voice for the restoration and revitalization of the Harbor District. The group has been especially effective at leveraging public and private investments for projects in and around the harbor. Building on prior work on habitat hotels and other submersive habitats, HDI will test another design for fully submersed aquatic planters. With each iteration they are learning new ways to improve the design so that habitat features can be installed along the waterfront and included in future stretches of the Harbor Riverwalk. HDI will also pilot a unique wetland habitat floating island along a shallow bay in the Kinnickinnic River modeled on Chicago’s Wild Mile. HDI will also continue to partner with the City of Milwaukee and Komatsu on the design, installation and inspection of the largest stretch of Riverwalk – ¾ mile long – ever to be completed in the city at one time.
