Blue Lotus Center Wetland Restoration and Accessibility

  • Grant Recipient: Blue Lotus Center
  • Amount: $25,000
  • Year: 2025
  • Watershed: Milwaukee River
  • Focus Area: Habitat Restoration

Our funding would support a wetland restoration project at the Blue Lotus Center, a 64-acre nature center whose mission is to make nature accessible to people with profound life challenges. Each year, the center partners with over 80 organizations to serve five main audiences: people with disabilities, people with chronic and terminal illnesses, memory care residents, survivors of abuse and trauma, and people from historically marginalized communities. The four-acre pond and wetland complex are at the heart of the property and an important asset in their programming. The pond is used by visitors for kayaking, fishing and swimming. The wetland and pond are groundwater fed headwaters of Myra Creek, a small tributary to the Milwaukee River.  Restoration and reduction of nutrient inputs will improve the water quality of the watershed in a highly visible setting.
