Milwaukee Riverkeeper has been training citizen scientists to monitor baseline water quality for over 15 years. This information has allowed the Riverkeeper team to serve as crucial educators and leaders, not just to community members but to government agencies and community partners, as well. Riverkeeper plans to grow the program by training more of its volunteers to monitor bacteria and winter road salt, targeting areas further north in the Milwaukee River Basin, and by expanding their Beach Ambassador program to protect Milwaukee’s beaches from pollution and to increase recreational use and safety.
