Fund For Lake Michigan

Baseline Water Quality Monitoring for the Milwaukee River Basin, 2020-2021

  • Grant Recipient: Milwaukee Riverkeeper
  • Amount: $203,000
  • Year: 2019
  • Watershed: Kinnickinnic River, Menomonee River, Milwaukee River
  • Focus Area: Monitoring/Watershed Planning

This funding will support Milwaukee Riverkeeper’s implementation, over a two-year period, of its new strategic water quality monitoring plan, which was developed with Fund support and in collaboration with MMSD, WDNR, USGS, SEWRPC, the School of Freshwater Sciences, and others. Under the plan, Riverkeeper will identify safe and easily accessible sites for monitoring and will recruit, train and support new volunteers in the Milwaukee River Basin. Riverkeeper will also continue to host winter salt application BMP workshops for public and private applicators to reduce the amount of road salt that is used for winter snow and ice removal.
