A Great Place on a Great Lake

  • Grant Recipient: Harbor District Inc.
  • Amount: $200,000
  • Year: 2025
  • Watershed: Lake Michigan Coast
  • Focus Area: Habitat Restoration

Over the last several years, HDI has successfully advanced several major water quality and habitat-related projects and initiatives in Milwaukee’s Harbor District.  In the last year and a half Harbor District has secured funding for multiple development or planning projects in and around the harbor. These includes $14.7 million to the City of Milwaukee through WisDOT and $500,000 from WEDC for Harbor View Riverwalk, $60,000 from Wisconsin Coastal Management Program and BID 51 for Milwaukee County’s Bruce Street Boat Ramp, and $1 million to the City of Milwaukee from EPA for the Riverwalk on the west bank of the KK.  A grant from the Fund will allow HDI to continue to leverage funding and bring new and ongoing projects to fruition. HDI staff will lead and coordinate efforts to improve water quality, habitat and access to the waterfront in and around the Inner Harbor.  This grant will fund HDI staff in support of the following efforts: design and construction of green infrastructure along the Kinnikinic River, restoring riparian woodlands, developing sections of the Riverwalk with habitat restoration, and supporting the Milwaukee Estuary Area of Concern and Community Advisory Committee.
